What This Place Actually Is
South Beach Casino & Resort is just off Highway 59 at 1 Ocean Drive in Scanterbury, Manitoba, roughly a half-hour drive north of Winnipeg. It is not a downtown stop-and-go casino. It works more like a small resort: hotel, pool, restaurant, gaming floor, weekend shows - everything in one spot.
The property is on the Brokenhead Ojibway Nation Reserve. That is not just a geographic detail, it shapes how the casino operates and where the money goes.
South Beach is one of three First Nation-owned casinos in Manitoba. Ownership is shared by seven Indigenous communities that work together through the Southeast Resource Development Council Corp (SERDC): Black River First Nation, Bloodvein First Nation, Brokenhead Ojibway Nation, Hollow Water First Nation, Little Grand Rapids First Nation, Pauingassi First Nation, and Poplar River First Nation. Revenue and jobs are tied back into these communities, which makes the place quite different from a privately owned or purely provincial casino.
We opened in 2005, on May 28. The Liquor, Gaming and Cannabis Authority of Manitoba (LGCA) oversees our gaming license. They set the rules, we operate within that provincial regulatory framework. That is the condition for running the casino here.
The Gaming Floor
For most guests, the first thing that stands out is the size of the gaming floor: more than 600 slot machines lined up and running. By slots, we mean electronic gaming machines where you press a button or pull a lever, the reels spin, and you hope the symbols line up into a paying combination. For someone new to casinos, this is usually the easiest spot to start.
We also run live table games. These are handled by real dealers and use cards or dice - the classic casino games such as blackjack or poker variants. Table game schedules are set separately, so they may not run for the full hours that the slots are available.
There is no door charge to get onto the gaming floor. You do not need a membership card to walk in, and you do not have to book a seat at the tables in advance.
The legal age is 18. Our security team checks ID at the entrance every time, for every guest. It is not random. You will need a valid government-issued photo ID, not a store card or something without a photo.

There is one simple habit that tends to make any casino visit easier on you. Decide how much you are comfortable spending before you sit down, not after you have been playing for an hour. It sounds very basic, but most people skip that step and then try to adjust on the fly. That nearly always goes sideways.
Planning the Trip
We promote South Beach Casino & Resort as a “Stay and Play” spot. In practice, this just means most guests combine an overnight stay with time on the gaming floor and a few meals on property. For weekends and holidays, reserving ahead is not about luxury, it is about actually getting a room.
A simple way to organize your visit looks like this:
- Start on southbeachcasino.ca and look over the live promos, room availability, and any listed events.
- Call 1-877-775-8259 when you are ready to confirm your room type, rate and make the booking.
- Double-check casino hours for your travel dates, paying attention to live table times versus slot hours.
- Put your government-issued photo ID in your wallet or bag so it does not get forgotten.
- Plan your drive: from Winnipeg head north on Highway 59, about a 30 minute run in usual traffic.
- Keep our check-in time in mind: from 3:00 PM. Check-out is by 12:00 PM.
- When you arrive, ask the front desk about current pool hours. Adult-only swims are scheduled at specific times, separate from family access.
The property is built to keep you mostly on-site. There is a restaurant, bar, weekend entertainment, and enough going on that you are not constantly driving out to look for food or something to do.
